Here Are Some Answers to Questions You May Have

Where is Harriet Chapel located?

Harriet Chapel, Catoctin Episcopal Parish is located just south of Thurmont diagonally across from the historic Iron Furnace in the scenic village of Catoctin Furnace.

12625 Catoctin Furnace Road, Thurmont, Maryland 21788.  Phone: 301-271-4554

Where do I park?

We use the lot in front of the church and any spaces to the right of the church. In the front lot we park with one car behind the other. After church, we coordinate the spaces so everyone can leave who wants to leave.

At what time and how long is the church service?

Our service begins at 9 AM and usually lasts about one hour.

What is a typical Episcopal service like?

Here are some tips about the service for newcomers:

Part 1: The Service of the Word: prayers, scripture, hymns and sermon.

Then we take time to greet each other and share God’s Peace

Part 2: The Eucharist, also known as Communion or The Lord’s Supper

Everyone is invited, but not required, to come to the altar rail to take communion. You may take the wafer and/or the wine and gluten free wafers are available; just ask the celebrant. If you would just like a blessing or a prayer, just cross your arms over your chest.   If it is difficult for you to come to the altar rail, tell the usher, remain in your seat and it will be brought to you.

What should I wear?

Harriet Chapel does not have a dress code. Please dress as you feel is comfortable and appropriate.

Is the church wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the church and the parish house are both accessible: however, the bathrooms will not accommodate a wheelchair easily.

What is your policy regarding masks?

Please feel free to wear a mask if that is your choice.

Where are the restrooms?

There are two bathrooms in the hallway to the parish hall. Take the walkway to the porch and enter through the door straight ahead. Both restrooms are marked and are gender neutral.  The bathroom straight ahead has been used by those in wheelchairs but it takes extra effort.

What hours are the church and church office open?

The church is always open for prayer and reflection, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Our secretary, Susan Robinson, is here on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Rev. Douglas Smith or The Rev. Sally Joyner Giffin will be  the office during those hours and would be glad to talk with you.  The office phone number is 301-271-4554.

What do I do in a pastoral emergency?

Call the church at 301-271-4554. If no one answers, leave a message and someone will get back to you.
